This vital project has replaced an ancient cast iron water main, renewed supply pipes to houses and upgraded old fire hydrants and sluice valves
Irish Water worked in partnership with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to replace 785 metres of ageing water mains on Monkstown Road in Co Dublin. The €350,000 investment replaced the approximately 140 year old water main which was prone to frequent bursts. The works were carried out by Córas Pipeline Services Limited on behalf of Irish Water. It was vital that this old water main was replaced to provide a secure water supply for customers.
This project replaced the ageing cast iron water main on Monkstown Road with a modern high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic water main. A problematic, shared backyard water main supplying a number of houses on Monkstown Road was taken out of service and the houses were connected directly to the new water main. This new main has provided customers with a more reliable water supply, increased water pressure and removed any issues around discoloured water which were happening when their water supply was fed from the old water main. The project also included upgrading the existing fire hydrants on Monkstown Road to meet the current fire regulation standards and the replacement of old valves, most of which have not worked for years.

Commenting on the project, Ivan Corcoran, Capital Programme Lead, said “It is vital that this ageing water main was replaced. The water main dates back to approximately 1870 and customers in the area have been impacted by frequent water outages. The new water main has secured the water supply for customers and provided them with a reliable water service. During the project the fire hydrants along Monkstown Road were replaced as they currently don’t meet fire regulation standards. The replacement of the fire hydrants has ensured that the emergency services will have access to equipment that meets the correct standards should an emergency arise”
Irish Water spent over €526 million on water and wastewater services in 2017. Capital investment in the region of €700 million per year is needed for a sustained period of several decades to address the poor condition of Ireland’s water infrastructure. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan up to 2021. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021 while achieving efficiencies of €1.6 billion.
